Ecovillages/communities mushrooming around the world?

as the big cities may fragment, cooperative endeavors seem to be taken off - see for yourself.

Its good to see the nitwits are all gathering in one place. Maybe we can turn those communes into FEMA camps and save the government the trouble of busing them to the ones we already have built.

Please, don't bother. YOU seem to be doing a fine job turning the whole country into FEMA camps.

I think several people on GIM have joined Self Organizing Communities, and they got nothing but best wishes, and wishes a lot of us could follow.Nitwits???? Those people attempting to find as much Freedom Independence as they can, are not NITWITS..In fact ,you will find the majority very intelligent, concerned about the future, and not prone to name calling to cope...This supposed to be a forum of ideas..If you can't contribute with out name calling ,and negative association, then we have to feel sorry for you, or wonder if the comments have another purpose and Masters to serve..............?????????????..........

are you going to justify your statement?

I have family living in an eco-village situation, and they love it. Socially and structurally, they are 20x more prepared for a post-consumer culture than the average American. They use less resources and share the resources they have. For instance:

Heating is done with shared hot water pipes under the slabs of all homes. Dwellings don't have laundry rooms, there is a shared laundromat. All outdoor tools are shared - no need for 40 families to have 40 lawnmowers - they have 1 electric tractor. The internet connection is shared. Many autos are shared. You can borrow or rent a car from a neighbor if you only need one occasionally. There's an co-op organic farm on the property. They are starting a school that teaches kids real-world skills. They have less things but don't really miss them. They save a lot of money and the kids are happy and safe. It's a good trend.

I like the idea of these sustainable communities but AFAIK it's mostly just for hippies. I don't think I've ever heard of any of these places being serious about their security. This quote from I Am Legend comes to mind...

Quote:

Six billion people on Earth when the infection hit. KV had a
ninety-percent kill rate, thats five point four billion people
dead. Crashed and bled out. Dead. Less than one-percent immunity.
That left twelve million healthy people, like you, me, and Ethan.
The other five hundred and eighty-eight million turned into your
dark seekers, and then they got hungry and they killed and fed on
everybody.

Re: Ecovillages/communities mushrooming around the world?

For "hippies"? I guess that's pretty accurate. But it's not a commune, just a community designed for low-impact living with like-minded people. They want to live in reasonable concert with each other and the land. They see the value in simpler ways but don't want to go it alone.

Security is extremely lax, of course - but nobody is attacking them. They have few weapons, but it would be a mistake to think a handful of armed thugs could take them down. They are a tribe and they will stick together against an outside attacker. If your home was attacked, would 200 neighbors rush to your aid? There, they would.

Re: Ecovillages/communities mushrooming around the world?

I don't necessarily mean anything derogatory by "hippies." There's certainly much worse philosophies out there and I have a lot of respect for much of what they're trying to accomplish in these sustainable villages. My only concern is how that lifestyle will serve them in a situation where people are eating other people to survive. Hopefully that will never happen in the first place but it sure looks like things could get really bad all around the world within a couple years. A closely knit community is a beautiful thing but I'm worried about what may happen when outsiders roll in and start shooting up the place. I would just like to see them come to grips with the security issue in a practical way.

I personally love the idea of 5-10 people/families living on 200 acres of land. More if you can get it.

I find it pretty humorous that the same conspiracy kooks who think the government is building camps to hold all the people, are the same ones who are moving themselves into camps!

Re: Ecovillages/communities mushrooming around the world?

There is a lot to be said for sharing resources, but the people you work with have to be like-minded and practical. If you break the mower for example, you fix it (with help if required), don't just pass it back and expect someone else to inherit your problem because you're a lazy sod.

Village type living with good, practical people can work. Village type living with a bunch of hippy stoners who want you to do all the hard graft would be hell.

This is obviously a long term trend and I think it will evolve into many different shapes.

(I myself hope to be putting together a project along these lines in the next few years, except it would be a bit more high end and a bit less communal than most.)

I'm laughing.

The hippie mechanics were just as good as

The redneck mechanics.

The hippie gardeners were just as good as

The redneck gardeners.

And when you got down to the war,

That being the Vietnam war, in those days,

We were united, in the sense that

It was "f...k the politicians."

And dope was dope

And salmon was salmon.

And rock was rock,

And country was country.

The post-mortem twisting of history

As it actually went down,

By the media

Is almost beyond belief.

Now, mind you

You will still find extremists on either

End of the teeter-totter.

And they hog the headlines.

But I can tell you that

Country folk tend to hang together,

Despite the yellow press,

Or hair length,

Or vehicle choice,

Or whatever the newspapers are

Hollering about.
